Using a meter key correctly is a little different than using a standard key for a standard lock. Because the meter lock used most often is a cylinder lock there is also a custom key that is used. This key is far more precise than your typical pad lock key. Because it is so precise it must be used carefully so as to avoid damage to both the lock and the meter key. The process itself is quite simple in that a plunger is injected into a hole in the top of the barrel lock and a plunger actuated. The process is then reversed and the lock is unloced. The same process is reversed to lock a barrel lock again.
