Unlocking an electrical meter box it is really quite simple and only requires understanding how the actual lock is constructed. A power meter box typically uses a lock that is comprised of a solid type rod with a uniquely shaped head that is flared. This type assembly allows for steel spring type blades to engage and effectively lock. An electrical meter box panel lock has a spring loaded type sleeve within a solid housing. This lock assembly or housing is typically mounted internally or external to the meter box itself. The proper way to open an electrical panel lock is to use the right tool or meter key. Using an incompatible or improper tool or key can ultimately damage a lock and make a panel accessible. When using the right electrical meter key the spring loaded type sleeve releases the spring type blades and unlocks the lock.
